NATURE OF THE PROJECT

A vast project to transform the area round Place des Arts and create a series of very high-quality public spaces that will:

  • provide a base for festivals during the festival season, but remain accessible and vibrant all year round
  • encourage property development around public squares, much of it to be earmarked for cultural activities
  • help make the Quartier des spectacles a world-class cultural destination

CHARACTERISTICS

Place des Festivals (phase 1)

  • create a unique public space to meet the needs of festival organizers and strengthen the identity of the Quartier des spectacles
  • create a vibrant commercial environment to offset the presence of blind walls
  • encourage extensive repurposing of the built environment all around the Place des Festivals


Promenade des Artistes / Le Parterre (phase 2)

  • create new public spaces
  • provide event organizers with permanent infrastructure
  • add to the prestige of the Adresse symphonique and provide orchestras with an outdoor performance space


Sainte-Catherine axis (phase 3)

  • level off rue Sainte-Catherine between De Bullion and Saint-Alexandre streets, to make it a linear public space unique in Montréal
  • express and celebrate the neighbourhood's distinct face, by giving it a design style unique in Montréal


Esplanade Clark (phase 4)

  • create a grassy public space
  • revitalize rue Clark
  • link the Parterre with rue Sainte-Catherine
  • provide spaces suited to festival
